"You can't just sit there and wait for people to give you that golden dream. You've got to get out there and make it happen for yourself."
Diana Ross

Setting and Committing to Your Career and Goals (DREAM!)

Remember back in 2nd grade when you knew exactly what you wanted to be when you grew up?  For most that vision is totally different now than back then.  My four-year-old is convinced she wants to be a firefighter when she grows up, but I know that will change.

As we progress through our professional lives, our visions, dreams, and goals change.  As we reach one goal we set another one, at least that is how it should work.  To become that 5%, cream of the crop, you have to be consistent in your goal setting and set realistic goals that will ultimately lead to your dream.

Answer the following questions:

  1. Where do you see yourself in one year, five years, and ten years?  For each, visualize what it is you want to have accomplished.
  2. How will you accomplish each goal?
  3. What obstacles may you have to overcome?
  4.  How will you overcome them?
  5. Write It Down – Make yourself accountable to your plan.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national unemployment rate in April 2006 was 4.7% and continues to decline.  We are on the cusp of the first wave of Baby Boomer retirees and soon candidates will have their pick of positions.  Prepare yourself for this by establishing your plan and sticking to it.  Enlist a friend or colleague to hold you accountable to your plan and review your plan every quarter to see how you are doing and what changes need to be made to get closer to your end goals.

Anna Chagnon, Pageflex CEO, stated "The printing industry is in the midst of a fundamental transformation as printers of every size and geographic location have to redefine themselves as marketing specialists and partners with their customers. Digital printing, variable data, and web-to-print technologies have become critical services for printers to offer.”

The edoc, print, and mail industries are experiencing significant changes as value added services become the norm to stay competitive.  As a professional in this industry, you will need to evaluate your personality traits and make changes as necessary to coincide with both your goals and the industry changes.

In the second article of this series, we will delve further into the evaluation of your strengths and weaknesses and how to maximize your marketable qualities in the job hunt.
